Doberman's have been part of my household since 1977, so
in 1999, when it was time to bring a new dog into the
house, we knew what we wanted. On our second visit to
Chuck Vaile's house we met a sweet, four year old, red
female, named "Aurora". She had been rescued and was
looking for a nice home.
When she first arrived at our house, Aurora was afraid of
women, including my wife, Jan. Aurora would only venture
out from under the desk when Jan bribed her with food or
had the leash in her hand. So, the first order of business
was to enroll Aurora (and Jan) in the basic dog obedience
class I taught. Jan and Aurora did well and Aurora learned
to trust and love Jan. They both benefited from the
structured learning experience and I would recommend it to
all owners of a new dog. After graduation, Aurora looked
forward to the weekly classes, since she was my "demo" dog
and she liked being the center of attention. She also like
being around the other dogs in a non-threatening
atmosphere.
Initially, Aurora was insecure, but her confidence grew
during the first year she was with us, especially when she
started to spend time with me at work. As a "real estate
Doberman", Aurora blossomed and became very social. She
especially likes the little children that visit our office
and is fascinated by infants. Her favorite activity is
riding in the car while I am out touring properties.
Aurora is a "disguised" Doberman. She's a red dobe
(chocolate really), with floppy ears and a long tail, so
even those who are afraid of black Dobermans are
comfortable with her. She is a well known member of our
community and is very well liked.
